Music and Performing Arts at Wilson Primary School
At Wilson Primary School, we believe that Music and the Performing Arts are essential for fostering creativity, confidence, and collaboration in our students. Our programs are aligned with the Western Australian Curriculum, ensuring that every child develops skills in listening, performing, and composing while exploring a diverse range of musical styles and cultural traditions.
Students engage in classroom music lessons that build their understanding of rhythm, melody, and expression, while also developing critical and creative thinking. These lessons provide a strong foundation for lifelong appreciation and participation in the arts.
Beyond the classroom, we offer vibrant extra-curricular opportunities for students to showcase their talents:
- School Choir – Meeting every Thursday morning, our choir performs at prestigious events such as the WAGSMS Concert Series and the Massed Choir Festival, as well as local community events within the City of Canning. These experiences allow students to share their voices and connect with the wider community.
- Twirlstars Baton Twirling Group – Meeting every Tuesday morning, the Twirlstars combine athleticism and artistry in baton twirling routines. They have proudly represented Wilson Primary School at community events, including the Channel 7 Christmas Pageant.
- Instrumental Music School Services (IMSS) Program – Students are tested in Year 4 for inclusion in this program during Years 5 and 6. At Wilson Primary School, the IMSS program offers tuition in the clarinet, providing students with specialist instruction and opportunities to perform in ensembles.
Supporting Student Growth
Our Music and Performing Arts programs do more than teach technical skills—they help students grow as confident, resilient, and creative individuals. Participation in these programs supports the General Capabilities outlined in the SCSA curriculum, including:
- Personal and Social Capability – Building teamwork, responsibility, and self-confidence through group performances.
- Critical and Creative Thinking – Encouraging problem-solving and innovation in music-making and choreography.
- Intercultural Understanding – Exploring diverse musical traditions and appreciating cultural expression.
Through these experiences, students develop communication skills, perseverance, and a sense of pride in their achievements, preparing them for success both within and beyond the classroom.
